Cal Maritime Creates Ombuds Program

The California Maritime Academy, the California State University campus in Vallejo and the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast, has opened an Ombuds Program for all of its stakeholders. Cases are handled by seven volunteer "Dispute Resolution Facilitators" who are also faculty, staff, and students.

The program is administered by an Ombuds Coordinator, Brigham Timpson, who also serves Director of University Affairs. The Cal Maritime Ombuds Program operates largely in accordance with IOA Standards, with the notable exception of "matters related to sex discrimination, child abuse, and/or other matters that may trigger a reporting obligation." 1. Glad to see they "mostly" practice to IOA standards and have regular internal training. But how are they doing that when none are IOA members?
