The congregational arm of Reform Judaism in North America is hiring its first Ombuds. The URJ comprises 846 congregations in the United States and 27 in Canada, with a total constituency of over one million. The new Ombuds will provide "confidential support and guidance with regard to complaints or related questions arising from past and present experiences in URJ communities, including worksites, camps, and programming." Virtual and in-person work will be provided under an hourly contract starting as early as June 15, 2022.
Preferred qualifications include: Advanced degree or certification in Social Work, Counseling, or Psychology; Organizational or advocacy [sic] ombuds work experience; Mediation training and/or experience; and Certified Organizational Ombuds Practitioner (CO-OP) certified. The expected compensation will range from $25 to $30 per hour. (Jewish Jobs.)
Wait...what??? One (apparently part-time) Ombuds for a million stakeholders in 900 distinct congregations, in two countries and across four time zones for just $30 an hour. These are the most egregious numbers I have ever seen on this blog. I'm tempted to apply just to have a meeting to tell them they need to do some more research and start over.
Regardless of time-zone, contract Ombuds compensation is comparable to that of a consultant or attorney. Someone should let them know that they are very off in their numbers, for sure!
