The University of California's law school in San Francisco (formerly known as UC Hastings College of Law) has reopened its search for an inaugural Ombudsperson. After an eight month national search, Lucia Galante Johnson was selected to be the school's first Ombudsperson in June 2023. The new, 37.5% part-time position (previously only 25%) will establish a program to serve all campus constituents and practice to IOA standards.
Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree and at least three years of experience as an Organizational Ombuds or other similar role. The job will pay $37,500 (equal to $100,000 full-time). The position will be open until filled. (UC Law Posting.)
Update 9/21/23: Johnson left UC Law to start a new position as Associate Professor at California State University-Dominguez Hills.
Applicant beware: UC SF Law campus culture is currently extremely tense, with high faculty/visiting lecturer turn over, a culture of student wellness that is in distress, and a Board of Directors (separate from the Board of Regents for the UC system) which gate keeps funding for already-approved campus initiatives (i.e. student wellness funds collected and never released via vote by BOD). Current student movement to increase funding for this position because students are in distress and need ombuds services. Get ready listen to students cry.
A $100,000 1.0 FTE salary for San Francisco is laughable. This alone seems to provide some insight into how the school views this position.

Here's what they need to do: 1) Make it remote and 2) Contract only. They'll get a better pool of applicants.

ReplyDeleteCrying students, withheld funding, and ridiculously low compensation? What's not to love? Put me in, coach!
