Longtime Grinnell College Ombuds to Retire
After nine years as Grinnell's inaugural Ombuds, Chinyere Ukabiala, CO-OP, will retire on June 20, 2024. College President Anne F. Harris said, “Chinyere’s legacy extends beyond her individual achievements to the lasting impact she has had on our campus culture. Her commitment to constructive problem-solving, effective communication, and conflict resolution has left an indelible mark on all those she has served.”
Before becoming an Ombuds, she was the subject of a cover story in The Iowa Lawyer, for her work on improving the diversity and inclusion of the state's bar association. Ukabiala's work in and on behalf of the Ombuds community were equally impressive. In 2020, she served on IOA's Ombuds Office Effectiveness Project. In January 2023, she taught a new IOA course, “Understand & Communicate Ombuds Value to Your Organization.” She contributed to the IOA White Paper, “An Overview of Ombuds Confidentiality,” in 2023. As an Ombuds, she has spoken at many events, including the Summer (Midwest) Academic Ombuds meeting, IOA's annual conference, and the American Bar Association Dispute Resolution Section. Ukabiala is also an author of a chapter in the forthcoming IOA book. (Grinnell News; Iowa Lawyer.)
Chinyere's influence will be felt long after retirement! Ever grateful our paths have crossed - having worked with and learned from her has been a highlight of mine ever since I met her in conjunction with OSLAC. Wishing the best in retirement - but not yet! Looking forward to our continued relationship! Thank you for sharing of yourself beyond the Grinnell campus!
ReplyDeleteChinyere organized and has run a bi-weekly Ombuds from Small Liberal Arts Colleges (OSLAC) that supports Ombuds in their work.
ReplyDeleteThis legacy is so important to all Ombuddys as we generally have a minimal number of others who we can talk to and debrief our work with in a confidential manner.
Such online group has also commenced an annual Ombuddys retreat! Another place where Chinyere has freely given of her time and experience.
I have always found compassion, grace, and support when working with Chinyere. Her energy and skills will be missed by all her Ombuddy friends!
