Duke University Plans to Reconstitute Ombuds Office
Last week, the Academic Council at Duke considered a proposal to unify the current Faculty and Student Ombuds programs and expand the service to staff. The proposal is grounded in IOA standards, Ombuds practices at other universities (especially UNC), and input from past and current Duke Ombuds. The plan envisions two full-time Ombuds, one for primarily for faculty and staff, and the other for students. The unified Ombuds office would not serve the Duke Health System.Duke is nearing the end of a search for the Student Ombuds (there are three "outstanding" finalists). With little significant resistance from the faculty, the proposal looks inevitable. (Duce Academic Council meeting on YouTube, 4:15-52:10.)
