Ombuds at University of Oslo Marks Decade of Service

This February, Universitetet i Oslo's Student Ombuds (Studentombudet) celebrates ten years of service to its student body of 26,000. Marianne Høva Rustberggard, UiO's founding Ombuds is now assisted bya second Student Ombuds, Pål Gustavsen, and a communications adviser, Ingvild Refsum. Rustberggard reports that the office has assisted over 2,000 visitors with "a wide range of cases about everything from cheating, allegations of abuse of power, discrimination and sexual harassment, to the learning environment and demands for accommodation."

In addition to work on her own campus, Rustbeggard has also assisted nine other universities create Ombuds programs. (Juristen.)

Marianne is a brilliant Ombuds, I first met 10 years ago as she was just starting. So great to see this success.

Organizational Ombuds

Organizational Ombuds serve as a confidential, independent, neutral and informal dispute resolution resource for a specific entity. They are accessible to a defined population and can advocate for fairness. These unique characteristics distinguish Organizational Ombuds from Classical Ombuds, mediators, arbitrators, and other alternative dispute resolution professionals. The term "Ombuds" is shorthand for "Ombudsman," "Ombudsperson" and "Ombuds Officer," which also are used widely.
