Queen's University Selects Next Ombuds

Last month, Norma Barrett was named the Ombudsperson for the public research university in Kingston, Ontario. She leads an office which includes Associate Ombuds, Heather Trojek, who served as the Interim University Ombudsperson during the recent search. Together, they provide services to nearly 45,000 students, staff, and faculty. In the role, Barrett reports to the Board of Trustees with oversight by the University Culture Committee and Faculty Senate.

Barrett moves into the Ombuds role after five years as the Senior Director for Student Conduct and Care at Queen's. She also served as a member of the university's Ombudsperson Advisory Committee, and more recently as Chair of the Sexual Violence Policy Implementation Working Group. Prior to joining Queen's, Barrett served in the Canadian Armed Forces as a Deputy Judge Advocate. She graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada, and earned a JD at Queen's University and LLM at York University's Osgoode Hall Law School. (Queen's Gazette; LinkedIn.)
