Longtime Ombuds at University of Cincinnati Retires

Lillian Santa Maria, who has served as the Director of the UC Ombuds Office for 23 years, has retired. She became the University Ombuds in 1994, shortly after the university changed the name from Ombudsman. During her tenure, the office created several new programs, including student mediation training, and she was honored by the campus for creating a more just climate.

Stepping as Interim University Ombuds basis will be Kim Fulbright, who has been the Associate Ombuds for the past four years. Fulbright earned her MA from UC and has earned certificates in restorative justice and mediation. (Twitter; UC News; LinkedIn.)

Organizational Ombuds

Organizational Ombuds serve as a confidential, independent, neutral and informal dispute resolution resource for a specific entity. They are accessible to a defined population and can advocate for fairness. These unique characteristics distinguish Organizational Ombuds from Classical Ombuds, mediators, arbitrators, and other alternative dispute resolution professionals. The term "Ombuds" is shorthand for "Ombudsman," "Ombudsperson" and "Ombuds Officer," which also are used widely.
