In 1999, the University of Rennes established an Organizational Ombuds office (médiateur) to serve its 22,000 students. A recently published article in the European Journal of Legal Education discusses how Rennes' Ombuds program was established and differs from the prevailing classical model. Three cases are presented to illustrate how the Ombuds resolved issues while respecting the critical ethical tenets. The author concludes that an Organizational Ombuds program is consistent with the European Commission's endorsement of non-legal conciliation schemes.
