UC Davis Expands Ombuds Office

The University of California in Davis has hired Rita Callahan to serve as an Associate Ombudsperson. She joins Director Susan Kee-Young Park, who opened the Ombuds Office and has been serving the campus single-handedly since April 2013. Callahan started on October 15.

Callahan is an experienced ADR practitioner from New York. For the past six years, she has been a Senior Organizational Internal Consultant for ConEdison. In addition, as a consultant, she worked with federal agencies, non-profits, and other organizations. Callahn has been a mediator since 1995. She has been a board member of the Association for Conflict Resolution and its New York chapter, chaired a committee for the ABA Section on Dispute Resolution, and is an editorial board member of Conflict Resolution Quarterly. She graduated from SUNY Brockport and earned a Master’s in Decision Science from the Georgia State J. Mack Robinson College of Business. (UC Davis News; LinkedIn.)

Organizational Ombuds

Organizational Ombuds serve as a confidential, independent, neutral and informal dispute resolution resource for a specific entity. They are accessible to a defined population and can advocate for fairness. These unique characteristics distinguish Organizational Ombuds from Classical Ombuds, mediators, arbitrators, and other alternative dispute resolution professionals. The term "Ombuds" is shorthand for "Ombudsman," "Ombudsperson" and "Ombuds Officer," which also are used widely.
