Responding to Threats in Negotiation

The latest podcast from the Harvard Project on Negotiation offers three steps to deal with threats and ultimatums during negotiation:
  1. Consider whether ignoring the threat is the best option;
  2. Probe the motivation and intent behind the threat; and
  3. Decide whether there is an obligation to make amends.
Since these tactics and strategies have application beyond negotiations, ombuds will find them valuable. (PONcast.)
