Association of Canadian College and University Ombudspersons Sponsors Student Writing Contest

ACCUO has announced a contest to award two students, one in College and one in University, a prize of $1,000. Applicants must submit an essay of about 1,000 words, in English or French on their "academic interests and how they support social justice and the pursuit of a fair society" or "the role and value of the ombudsperson at [their] post-secondary institution." Applicants must be enrolled at one of 30 participating Canadian institutions. The deadline for submission is October 15 and winning essays may be published on the ACCUO website. Organizational Ombuds serve as a confidential, independent, neutral and informal dispute resolution resource for a specific entity. They are accessible to a defined population and can advocate for fairness. These unique characteristics distinguish Organizational Ombuds from Classical Ombuds, mediators, arbitrators, and other alternative dispute resolution professionals. The term "Ombuds" is shorthand for "Ombudsman," "Ombudsperson" and "Ombuds Officer," which also are used widely.
