The USF System--which includes three universities: USF Tampa, USF St. Petersburg, and USF Sarasota-Manatee--has appointed Steven Prevaux as its first Ombuds Officer. Prior to taking the position in January, Prevaux had been USF's General Counsel for over a dozen years.
He is certified by the Florida Bar in education law and is a mediator for the state circuit, civil, and appellate courts. Prevaux graduated from the University of Michigan and earned his JD at the University of North Carolina School of Law. Other Ombuds in the USF System include Jennifer Schneider at USF Tampa, Lauren Kurnov at USF Sarasota-Manatee, and Deni Elliott at USF St. Petersburg. (LinkedIn.)

For someone looking at the ombuds market in Florida, this is both amazing and demoralizing. He was their general counsel for a dozen years? Ombuds jobs in Florida seem rare and very competitive

DeleteSteven Prevaux deserve to be first Ombuds Officer in University of South Florida. His background are really impressive. This is a good start for him and surely he is more than fit for his position now.

I don't really have a problem either. The SFU System must have wanted a knowledgeable insider. That's an entirely reasonable decision.
DeleteSteven is certainly very qualified and the job itself is quite senior (which makes me feel better). I was just lamenting how hard it will be to get something in Florida but I have since found that there are a few options. I appreciate hearing that outsiders aren't often hired.
