Daemen University Appoint Next Ombuds

The private university in Amherst, New York (known as Daemen College until 2022) appointed Heather Cruz as its Faculty Ombudsperson in late 2023. In this part-time role, Cruz reports to Daemen's Vice President for Academic Affairs and practices to IOA standards.

Cruz is also the Vice Dean and Chief of Staff for the School of Social Work at the nearby University at Buffalo. Her career has included administrative posts at Erie Community College, SUNY Monroe Community College, and Niagara County. Organizational Ombuds serve as a confidential, independent, neutral and informal dispute resolution resource for a specific entity. They are accessible to a defined population and can advocate for fairness. These unique characteristics distinguish Organizational Ombuds from Classical Ombuds, mediators, arbitrators, and other alternative dispute resolution professionals. The term "Ombuds" is shorthand for "Ombudsman," "Ombudsperson" and "Ombuds Officer," which also are used widely.
