In November 2012, the state college in Gainesville, Florida appointed Bea Awoniyi as its Ombudsperson. Awoniyi also serves as the new Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs, with responsibilities for the Disabilities Resource Center and Student Affairs grants programs. Previously, she was the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of the Student Disability Resource Center at Florida State University.
Originally from Nigeria, Awoniyi advocated for inclusion of disabled students throughout the Nigerian school during since the 1970s. She served as co-chair of the Diversity Special Interest Group of the Association of Higher Education and Disabilities (AHEAD) and earned that organization's highest national award for service.
