Ombuds Training in New Orleans

The International Ombudsman Association returns to the Big Easy with several training sessions for new and experienced Ombuds, July 21-25, 2014. The programs include introductory, intermediate and advanced topics.

  • Foundations of Organizational Ombudsman Practice (formerly Organizational Ombudsman 101), July 21-23 [Instructors TBA]
    This three-day course that covers the fundamentals of the Organizational Ombuds role. It provides basic information and training for the Organizational Ombudsman by emphasizing the principles of confidentiality, neutrality, independence, and informality.
  • The Next Step for New or Growing Programs (formerly Organizational Ombudsman 101 PLUS), July 24
    Taught by Wendy E. Friede, CO-OP, this one-day course will concentrate on how to communicate the value and benefits of an Ombudsman function internally to management who are considering starting an Ombudsman Office, and from the outside if you are an entrepreneur.  (Foundations of Organizational Ombudsman Practice is a prerequisite.)
  • Practical Negotiation Principles for Ombuds Professionals, July 24
    Taught by Mary Beth Stevens, Laboratory Ombudsman, Los Alamos National Laboratory, this half-day course will apply Fisher & Ury’s principled negotiation fundamentals to negotiation scenarios common to all Ombuds programs, and focus on the elements of a satisfactory negotiated agreement.  (Foundations of Organizational Ombudsman Practice is a prerequisite.)
  • Suicide Awareness and Crisis Response: Potential Roles for Ombuds, July 24
    Taught by Mary Beth Stevens, Laboratory Ombudsman, Los Alamos National Laboratory, this half-day course will educate Ombuds about suicide and how to encourage help-seeking behaviors in the workplace.  (Foundations of Organizational Ombudsman Practice is a prerequisite.)
  • Workshop for Supervisors: Dealing with Conflict Among or Between Supervisees, July 25
    Taught by Tom Sebok, CO-OP, Director and Ombuds, University of Colorado at Boulder, this half-day course workshop helps supervisors recognize and evaluate their options when facing conflict among direct reports.  (Foundations of Organizational Ombudsman Practice is a prerequisite.)
  • Promoting a Respectful Workplace, July 24
    Taught by Tom Sebok, CO-OP, Director and Ombuds, University of Colorado at Boulder, this half-day course will teach group facilitation strategies for proactively assisting groups in promoting a respectful working environment.  (Foundations of Organizational Ombudsman Practice is a prerequisite.)
