National University Names First Ombuds

LaCrisia "Cris" Gilbert has been appointed the first Ombuds for the private, non-profit university headquartered in La Jolla, California. As the University Ombuds, Gilbert is expected to practice to IOA standards and serve a large student body. Gilbert comes to National University from the University of North Texas, where she was an adjunct professor and director of a conflict resolution center for the past decade.

Gilbert has had a private mediation practice and served as a certified long-term care Ombudsman in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. She graduated from LeTourneau University and earned a Master of Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine's Straus Institute. (LinkedIn.)

Organizational Ombuds serve as a confidential, independent, neutral and informal dispute resolution resource for a specific entity. They are accessible to a defined population and can advocate for fairness. These unique characteristics distinguish Organizational Ombuds from Classical Ombuds, mediators, arbitrators, and other alternative dispute resolution professionals. The term "Ombuds" is shorthand for "Ombudsman," "Ombudsperson" and "Ombuds Officer," which also are used widely.
