Job Re-Posting: Providence College

The private Catholic university in Rhode Island has extended the search for its first Faculty Ombuds. The full-time position will create a program to serve over 350 faculty members adhering to IOA standards. Initially, the search was expected to close earlier this year.

Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree and at least five years of related experience, including at least one year of full-time Ombuds experience. Preferred qualifications include a Master’s degree or other advanced degree and work experience in higher education. The position will pay $61,075 to $97,721 per year. Applications will be reviewed starting in January 2024. (Providence Careers.)

Given the exceedingly low cost of living in Rhode Island and Providence Plantations $61k for an advanced degree AND higher education seems profligate. Just who is minding the budget there. Minimum wage plus a bit should be sufficient, especially with the generous social safety net in New England.

Organizational Ombuds

Organizational Ombuds serve as a confidential, independent, neutral and informal dispute resolution resource for a specific entity. They are accessible to a defined population and can advocate for fairness. These unique characteristics distinguish Organizational Ombuds from Classical Ombuds, mediators, arbitrators, and other alternative dispute resolution professionals. The term "Ombuds" is shorthand for "Ombudsman," "Ombudsperson" and "Ombuds Officer," which also are used widely.
