Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Institutional Resolution and Accessibility, the Manager will be responsible for providing informal assistance to university constituents who raise inquiries, conflicts, and concerns. This position ensures that these matters are impartially investigated and resolved within established timeframes. The Manager will also direct constituents to the appropriate internal and external resources in order to resolve concerns. This role is an integral part of the Office of Institutional Resolution and Accessibility (IRA) and applies knowledge and experience to the development of the organization.
While maintaining confidentiality of communications, the Manager may prepare a periodic report to the university community. Based on anonymous aggregate data, this report discusses trends in the reporting of inquiries, conflicts, and concerns, identifies patterns or problem areas in university/college policies and practices, may recommend revisions and improvements, and may assess the climate of the community. It appears that this is a new position for UMUC. Applicants should have a master's degree (JD or PhD preferred) and three years of experience in a dispute resolution or as an Ombuds (certification preferred). No salary indicated. Applications are due Friday, November 2, 2012. (UMUC Careers, Job ID: 443; via Washington Post.)
So... the question is: If UMUC wants an Ombuds to do Ombuds-like work, why isn't it hiring an Ombuds?
Something smells.

Maybe it's the reporting structure -- it's nowhere near the top on the org chart.
ReplyDeleteThe post says "***ONLY CURRENT INTERNAL UMUC EMPLOYEES WILL BE CONSIDERED**".
