According to an announcement from IOA, Distinguished Emeritus Member Carolyn Stieber, passed away on Saturday September 12, 2015. Steiber was appointed Michigan State University's second Ombuds in 1974 and held the position for 17 years, from 1974-1991. Stieber was member of an infomal group of Ombuds in the Midwest that evolved into the University and College Ombudsman Association.
She served as a member of UCOA’s first Board of Directors and was its President in the 1988-1989 academic year. She was profiled in the Journal of IOA in 2013 as a pioneer in the Ombuds field. IOA President Reese Ramos said, "The IOA Community extends condolences to the family, friends and colleagues that were touched by Carolyn’s life and legacy." (Lansing State Journal Obit; JIOA 6:2.)
