When he became the Ombudsman for Students at the University of Leiden in May, Eugène van der Heijden inherited 35 cases from his predecessor, Jacqueline van Meerkerk. Since then, he has received 45 more. All of his cases involve students who they think they have been treated improperly by a staff member or by one of the university’s administrative bodies.
Van der Heijdenhas comes to the position with more then two decades of experience in higher education and alternative dispute resolution. His career has included 13 years at Delft University of Technology, where he a senior advisor in legal affairs, and five years as a mediator in private practice handling employment disputes. He graduated from Sint Stanislas College Delft and earned his masters degree in law and French language and literature from Leiden University. (Leiden News; LinkedIn.)
