FCPA Blog: Ombuds Enhance Global Compliance

In a guest post for the blog focused on the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, Ombuds evangelist John Zinsser explains that, "An ombuds program is a cost effective mechanism to enhance global compliance."

Zinsser points to Baker Hughes, Eaton, Mars, and AMEX as examples of companies that have created the Ombuds programs to support employees nearby and around the world.

The organizational ombuds function supports employees of all levels to raise issues, consider options, and manage challenges. Whether by being a thought-partner, navigational tool, coach or facilitator, an ombuds biggest role is enhancing communication in the organization.

Organizational Ombuds

Organizational Ombuds serve as a confidential, independent, neutral and informal dispute resolution resource for a specific entity. They are accessible to a defined population and can advocate for fairness. These unique characteristics distinguish Organizational Ombuds from Classical Ombuds, mediators, arbitrators, and other alternative dispute resolution professionals. The term "Ombuds" is shorthand for "Ombudsman," "Ombudsperson" and "Ombuds Officer," which also are used widely.
