Job Re-Posting: Howard University

The private university in Washington, D.C. has reposted its opening for an inaugural Faculty Ombudsperson, a full-time position. Howard conducted similar searches in 2016, 2018, and earlier this year, but did not result in an appointment. The faculty handbook has included reference to a Faculty Ombuds Office since 2019 and stipulates that the position will be located within the Office of the President.

Qualifications for the position have changed slightly and salary information is now posted. Applicants must have a Bachelor’s in relevant field. The earlier requirement for five years or more of professional experiences in dispute resolution has disappeared. An advanced degree is preferred. According to the posting, applicants also should be a member of IOA. Previously, no salary information was offered; now the posting says the range is $109,091 to $120,000 per year. Applications will be accepted until filled. (Howard Careers; HU Faculty Handbook.)

  1. It sounds like they may have someone in mind, perhaps internal, that doesn't have the experience.

  2. They searched in 2016, 2018, and in 2024 and couldn't settle on a candidate? Could it be that the searches were performative? Hey folx we really, really, REALLY wanted to start this ombuds thing we just couldn't find anyone.
