Stony Brook University Adds Second Ombuds
The State University of New York at Stony Brook has expanded its Ombuds Office with the appointment of Alexis Rodgers as Stony Brook Medicine Ombuds. She joins Donna Buehler, who has served as University Ombuds since 2014, creating a two-person office serving distinct constituencies across the institution. Rodgers will serve Stony Brook Medicine, including hospitals, research facilities, and clinics, while Buehler will continue to serve the main campus and the rest of the university community. The two Ombuds will collaborate on workshops and other educational resources for the university.

Virginia Health Sciences Adds Two Associate Ombuds
Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University has added two Associate Ombuds to its Ombuds Services Office: Marilyn Caymo and Dawn James Valentine. Meet the Second Ombuds for Harris Health System
In February 2025, Lauren Manning Salomon became the second Ombuds for the public healthcare system for Harris County, Texas, joining the Managing Ombuds Director, Jai McBride-Calloway. Salomon assisting in providing Ombuds services to over 7,000 HHS employees across three hospitals and affiliated clinics. She has been with the health care provider since 2019 and has held positions

In November 2025, Billie Jo Alexander became the inaugural Ombuds for the not-for-profit, acute care hospital in McComb, Mississippi. She provides providing services to over 1,100 staff, clinicians, and administrators aligned with IOA standards.

Henry Yampolsky has been selected as the first Ombuds for the University of Virginia Health System. Next week, Yampolsky joins University Ombuds, Amanda Monaco, and will provide services to about 13,000 faculty, staff, residents, postdocs, and students in the schools of medicine and nursing in Charlottesville and locations across the state. In addition, he is also also expected to be the primary facilitator and trainer for the UVA University Ombuds Office.

Amsterdam UMC Selects Next Ombuds
Carolijn Winnubst was appointed the Ombudsman for Amsterdam Universitair Medische Centra in August 2024. She follows Henny Krijnen, who served in the role for nearly five years. As the Ombuds, Winnubst heads a program that includes the Confidential Affairs office and provides services to UMC employees.

Article Proposes Ombuds for Graduate Medical Education
The current issue of the Journal of Education in Perioperative Medicine includes an article, "The Role of Ombuds in Graduate Medical Education: Fostering Wellness and Psychological Safety." The authors, all faculty members at Harvard or Columbia (including Jennifer Danielsson, Ombuds for anesthesia residents at Columbia), urge the establishment of Education Ombudsperson for medical residents and fellow to foster psychological safety, wellness, and professionalism in training programs. They assert that Ombuds programs that serve university students or faculty are insufficient to address the unique nature of graduate medical education.

The Royal Melbourne Hospital Shutters Ombuds Office
The prominent Australian public teaching hospital will close its Ombuds office at the end of August 2024. The program was established in January 2022 by Lisa Klug, who piloted an Ombuds role (designated "Independent Facilitator") in 2018-2022 for Safer Care Victoria, which also served The Royal Melbourne Hospital. These were the only examples of Organizational Ombuds programs in healthcare in Australia. Klug is resigning for other opportunities and the position will not be refilled.

Leiden University Medical Center Appoints First Ombuds
In January 2024, Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum, the teaching hospital affiliated with Leiden University in the Netherlands, named Margot Snelders-Pouw as its first Ombudsfunctionaris. As the LUMC Ombuds, she serves as a confidential, independent, and neutral resource for employees, including PhD students.
