Developments in the University of Mississippi Ombuds Controversy

This blog has been following the situation at Ole Miss, which has put its Ombuds, Paul Caffera, on administrative leave and appointed an Acting Ombuds, William W. Berry III. IOA and the Mississippi Free Press are also following the case closely. Recent developments include:

  • In light of the university's legal argument (made in its motion to dismiss Caffera's suit) that emails to the Ombuds are not confidential, an anonymous group has filed a public records act request for copies of emails to and from the Acting Ombuds (Twitter @WinstonSmithOMI);

  • Another group has launched a fundraising campaign to raise $20,000 to cover Caffera's legal fees (GoFundMe); and

  • A reporter with the Chronicle of Higher Education has begun investigating the case.

  1. I believe the technical term for the management style at Ole Miss is clusterf**k.

  3. I think the role model for Ol' Miss' management style is more pointed... harkening beyond "clusterf**k mode" and actually drawing inspiration from the nightstick and water cannon used to try to destroy the Civil Rights movement. You can dress Bull Connor up in a suit and a tie, but that doesn't make him any less of a fascist.
