Job Posting: California State University, Monterey Bay

The public university in Central California has opened a search for its first Ombudsperson. The CSUMB Ombuds will serve faculty, staff, and students at the mid-size university. Generally, the position will practice to IOA standards. However, a Cal State University system policy requires Ombuds to report sexual misconduct and gender discrimination to the campus Title IX officer.

CSUMB seeks an experienced practitioner. Applicants must have a Master’s., Ph.D., JD, or advanced certificate in mediation, conflict or dispute resolution, organizational psychology, higher education, counseling or related fields, and five years of relevant professional experience or training. No salary or application deadline indicated. (CSUMB Posting.)

  1. "Under the general supervision of the Associate Vice President for University Personnel...." Without a mechanism for censuring institutions that place "ombuds" under HR, counsel, DEI or other offices/officials at the top of the organization, such as AAUP does for violations of academic freedom, we will all be like the frog in the pan of water slowly being boiled, in ombuds' case into irrelevance.

  2. The benefits suck. I was going to apply but.... "The CSU is committed to offering benefit plans that provide employees options
from which to choose their appropriate level of coverage and to help manage
their wellness as well as retirement needs, if applicable. Unless otherwise stated,
eligible employees may enroll in employer-paid and voluntary benefits.
    ELIGIBILITY
To qualify for most benefits, you must have employment exceeding six months
and one day, with a time base of at least .50. Academic-year lecturers and
coaches are eligible for benefits if appointed for a minimum of one semester or
two consecutive quarters with a time base of .40 or greater. Employees who do
not meet eligibility requirements listed above may qualify for health care under
    the Affordable Care Act (ACA)."
