Ombuds Day 2023 Spans the Globe

The 6th Annual Ombuds Day is tomorrow: October 12, 2023. The website hosted by the ABA DR Ombuds Day subcommittee summarizes the many events taking place and, for most, it's not too late to register. The lead evenit is a a webinar featuring Thomas Zgambo, the Ombudsman for the International Monetary Fund. Zgambo has served as an Ombuds for 26 years, including stints at Polaroid, Coca Cola, MIT, and the World Bank. He will offer his insights and a conversation about the growth and evolution of the Ombuds profession.

Other events will be hosted by Association des ombudsmans en enseignement supérieur du Québec (AOESQ, the Association of Higher Education Ombudsmen of Quebec); African Ombudsman Research Centre (AORC) and the International Ombudsman Institute; and individual Ombuds programs around the world. Proclamations have been received from 29 states and the District of Columbia. Credit for the organizing of this year's Ombuds Day goes to Ryan Smith, Assistant University Ombudsperson at Michigan State University, Co-Chair of the ABA DR Ombuds Committee, and Chair of the ABA DR Ombuds Day Subcommittee. As of 10/11/23, there are 34 proclamations (33 states and 1 from Anchorage, Alaska! 😁

Organizational Ombuds

Organizational Ombuds serve as a confidential, independent, neutral and informal dispute resolution resource for a specific entity. They are accessible to a defined population and can advocate for fairness. These unique characteristics distinguish Organizational Ombuds from Classical Ombuds, mediators, arbitrators, and other alternative dispute resolution professionals. The term "Ombuds" is shorthand for "Ombudsman," "Ombudsperson" and "Ombuds Officer," which also are used widely.
