Texas Southern University Appoints Faculty Ombuds

The historically black university in Houston has appointed Andrea J. Shelton as its first Faculty Ombudsperson. Shelton is an Associate Professor of Health Care Administration in the TSU College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. She earned her BA from Howard University, MA from the University of South Florida and PhD from the University of Pittsburg. In addition, she is a trained mediator and has completed course work with IOA.

Previously, the university had an Ombuds with other administrative duties (i.e., "Chief of Staff & Senior Vice President of University Relations and Ombudsperson"), but never an Ombuds for faculty issues. Shelton took office on May 1, 2011. (TSU Faculty Senate Minutes.)

Updated 9/20/11: An earlier version of this post incorrectly listed Dr. Shelton's academic background.  I regret this error.
