University of Iowa Ombuds Reports Surge in Cases

In her latest annual report, UI University Ombudsperson, Cynthia Joyce, says that her office received 737 visitors in 2017-18, a 10% increase from the prior year. Staff comprised more than half the visitors and the hierarchical relationship issues predominated.

The report also highlighted two significant issues from the year: graduate students with significant health issues that threaten their enrollment and insurance coverage; and abusive behavior by highly effective people. The UI Office of the Ombudsperson includes Rachel Williams, Faculty Ombudsperson, and Kristal Gibson, Associate Ombudsperson. (UI Ombuds 2018 Report.)
