The public university in New South Wales is hiring its first Student Ombudsman. "Reporting to the Director Assurance Services, this newly created critical role requires comprehensive knowledge and understanding of relevant legislative educational frameworks and environments [and] expertise in supporting and working with students regarding their academic progression and assisting them dealing with their academic concerns." The University of Newcastle enrolls about 37,000 students across six campuses.
The oversight of student complaints in Australia is generally provided by Classical Ombudsmen—the NSW Ombudsman, for example, has jurisdiction over the University of New Castle. In addition, some Australian universities have student advocate programs called 'Ombudsmen.' This new, full-time Student Ombuds position at Newcastle will supplement the work of the Office of Student Advocacy and the Dean of Students.
Applicants must have an Australian residency or a valid work permit. Applications are due by December 1, 2019 and interviews will start in early January. The position will pay $115,126 to $123,349 AUD "plus contributory superannuation with Unisuper, attracting a generous employer contribution of 17%."
