Keeping Our Campuses Safe in a Time of War:
A University Ombuds Roundtable
December 20, 2023, 12pm-1:30pm PST

Ombuds have a responsibility to provide a safe space for visitors to their office, but not a responsibility to ensure that every member of a campus community feels safe in all of the interactions that occur on campus. But what responsibilities do ombuds have to participate in wider discussions around campus safety? Should ombuds be proactive in reaching out to campus leaders and offering to serve as a resource? And if ombuds are committed to addressing systemic issues on campus, what does that mean in the context of war. Ombuds are committed to taking care of their visitors. But ombuds also need to:
  • Take care of themselves (mental health, work life balance, reflective practice)
  • Take care of their office (both the staff and the reputation of the ombuds office across campus)
  • Take care of the field (following best practices, modeling the standards of the profession)
