Virginia Tech Adds First Associate Ombuds

Geoffrey Adelsberg will join the University Ombuds Office at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in January 2025. He will work with Director & University Ombuds, Reese Ramos, as the first Associate Ombuds and provide services to all campus stakeholders.

Adelsberg comes to the position from Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin, where he was an Associate Professor of Philosophy for the past four years. His research and teaching focus on complex, intergenerational social and political conflicts in the interest of social justice. Adelsberg graduated from Goucher College and earned his PhD at Vanderbilt University. (LinkedIn.)

Organizational Ombuds

Organizational Ombuds serve as a confidential, independent, neutral and informal dispute resolution resource for a specific entity. They are accessible to a defined population and can advocate for fairness. These unique characteristics distinguish Organizational Ombuds from Classical Ombuds, mediators, arbitrators, and other alternative dispute resolution professionals. The term "Ombuds" is shorthand for "Ombudsman," "Ombudsperson" and "Ombuds Officer," which also are used widely.
