United Nations Ombuds Office Reports Strong Demand for Services

The Office of the UN Ombudsman and Mediation Services says that it handled 2,633 cases in 2016, an increase of 10% over the prior year. The increase was due to continued growth in cases from the Secretariat while the volume from UNHCR and funds and programs have remained relative stable over the past few years.

The report highlights the reality that the UN is a difficult place to work: a recent internal survey found that 60% of respondents had experienced a workplace conflict in the prior three months. In addition to statistical details about cases, the UN Ombuds report also traces the history of the office and its mediation services. (UN Digital Library; English version.)

Somewhat surprisingly, none of the UNOMS staff are identified in the report, not even a byline.
