Wake Tech Ombuds Starting Group for Community College Ombuds

Wake Technical Community College's Ombuds, Jerry Nuesell, is heading up a new group for colleagues at other community colleges. While Ombuds Offices exist at hundreds of traditional four-year institutions of higher education and graduate programs, there are significantly fewer programs at community colleges.

Back in March of 2018, Nuesell coordinated the establishment of a community college Ombuds group, which has been meeting by phone on a bi-monthly basis since June. Given the somewhat unique needs and challenges associated with serving at a community college, the group is a network of peers who offer support and consultation, and share resources and best practices. Organizational Ombuds

Organizational Ombuds serve as a confidential, independent, neutral and informal dispute resolution resource for a specific entity. They are accessible to a defined population and can advocate for fairness. These unique characteristics distinguish Organizational Ombuds from Classical Ombuds, mediators, arbitrators, and other alternative dispute resolution professionals. The term "Ombuds" is shorthand for "Ombudsman," "Ombudsperson" and "Ombuds Officer," which also are used widely.
