Canadian Names Next DND/CAF Ombuds

Mario Baril has been appointed the next Ombud for the Department of National Defence (Ministère de la Défense nationale) and the Canadian Armed Forces (Forces armées canadiennes). He follows Gregory Lick, who served in the position from 2018 through June 2024, and Robyn Hynes, who has been the Interim Ombud for the past year.

Baril comes to the position after serving as the Ombud for Public Services and Procurement Canada since November 2022. Before that, he was the Ombudsperson for Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada for four years. His career also includes other senior leadership positions in government and a nonprofit association. Baril graduated from the University of Ottawa and earned an MPA at ÉNAP. (DND/CAF Ombudsman.)

Organizational Ombuds serve as a confidential, independent, neutral and informal dispute resolution resource for a specific entity. They are accessible to a defined population and can advocate for fairness. These unique characteristics distinguish Organizational Ombuds from Classical Ombuds, mediators, arbitrators, and other alternative dispute resolution professionals.
