Is the University of Hawai'i Planning to Reopen its Ombuds Offfice?

In September 2009, UH-Manoa closed its Ombuds Office, which had been established just three years earlier. At the time, UH-Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw explained that the decision was prompted by budget cuts affecting the entire university system. A recently released organizational chart for the UH-Manoa Office of the Chancellor indicates that a new Ombudsperson position is pending approval.

The chart seems to indicate that the Ombuds will be a faculty position. No other details are available from the University's website. (UH-Manoa Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administration, Finance, and Operations.)

The two of the University of Hawai'i Ombuds stayed in the profession and both ended up in Texas: Susan Park is now an Ombuds at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston; and Jennifer Graf Sims is now the Staff Ombuds at the University of Texas at Austin. Neal Milner returned to his work as a professor of political science.
