Ombuds for UN Funds and Programmes Releases 2020 Annual Report

Giuseppe De Palo, the Ombudsman for the United Nations Funds and Programmes, says that, "2020 was a highly productive year that saw significant continuing development of conflict management services." In 2020 a staff of 15, including Deputy Ombudsman Kentaro Kanyomozi, the program managed 331 cases from offices in Copenhagen, Bangkok, Dakar, Istanbul, Panama, and New York. De Palo attributed the overall decline in the total number of cases to the impact of the pandemic as UN staff shifted to remote work. In 2020, the office also mediated 40 cases, with a 97% success rate.

In addition to case data and office activities, the report also presents several observations and recommendations related to conflict last year. The Office of the Ombudsman for United Nations
Funds and Programmes expects to continue expanding its resources and will also open an office in Copenhagen later this year. (UNFP Ombuds 2020 Report.)
