African Ombudsman Research Centre Hosts International Webinar About Higher Ed Ombuds

AORC, the resource and archive center of the African Ombudsman and Mediators Association, will offer a webinar "Showcasing Higher Education Ombudsman" on May 9, 2023. The free event will be offered in partnership with the Association of Canadian College and University Ombudspersons, the European Network of Ombuds in Higher Education, and the International Ombuds Association and feature an international panel of experienced Ombuds. Simultaneous interpretation will be available in English, French, Portuguese, and Arabic.

The webinar will discuss the legal basis and mandate of the Higher Education Ombuds, the relationship with the National Ombudsman, the process for the appointment and removal, and the independence and reporting structures of Ombuds in higher ed. The webinar will also feature guidance on establishing a university or college Ombuds office, lessons learned, and advice based on the speakers’ respective experiences. The panel is set to include:

• Zetu Makamandela-Mguqulwa, former Ombudsman at University of Cape Town
• Amanda Dean, Ombuds for Staff and Faculty at Austin Community College, Austin, Texas
• Natalie Sharpe, Director of the Office of the Student Ombuds, University of Alberta
• Jean Grier, Vice-President of ENOHE
