North Carolina Plans Ombuds for State Crime Lab

Following reports of systemic problems at its forensics lab, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has announced changes that include an external Ombudsman.

State Attorney General Roy Cooper appointed former NC Court of Appeals Judge Gerald Arnold to serve as the lab's interim director and announced other plans to restore confidence in the lab. In order to identify problems and solutions earlier, the State Bureau of Investigation will, "Establish an ombudsman outside of the SBI to receive complaints and help resolve issues in order to address criticism and make changes when appropriate." No other details about the Ombuds program have been made public. (NC Dept. of Justice Press Release.)
