A new website (May 2022) website introduces the Ombuds for the University of Maryland, College Park, the state's flagship public university. Four Ombuds provide services to all stakeholders on the campus just outside Washington, DC: Faculty Ombuds, Karen M. O'Brien; Staff Ombuds, Mashanda Mosley; Graduate Students Ombuds, Mark A. Shayman; and Undergraduate Students Ombuds, Lisa Kiely.
Psychology Professor Karen M. O'Brien become the part-time Faculty Ombuds in November 2021. She has been a member of the faculty for more than 25 years and has held a variety of administrative position, including Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies and Co-director for the Counseling Psychology Doctoral Program. In addition to faculty, she also serves administrators.
Mashanda Mosley became the full-time Staff Ombuds this summer. She came to the position from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, where she was the Director of Employee Relations. She earned her JD from North Carolina Central University School of Law.
Mark Shayman has been a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering since 1986. In 2016, he took on the role of Ombuds for graduate students. Shayman has also held a several other administrative position, including MS Graduate Director, Associate Director for Education, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Graduate Programs, and currently Associate Dean of the Graduate School for Student Success.
Lisa Kiely was appointed the Ombuds for Undergraduate Students in March 2020. For the past two decades, she has also served as the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Studies.
