SHRM White Paper Promotes Ombuds as Tool for Workplace Bullying

Kira Nureli, Ombuds and leadership consultant, is the author of a new white paper published by the Society for Human Resource Management. "The Importance of Workplace Civility" offers several strategies to mitigate workplace incivility, including Ombuds. Nureli, who heads Harmony Strategies Group, says, "Use a dispute resolution service or organizational ombuds to address civil behavior breaches quickly and thoroughly." She is a frequent speaker about Ombuds and also will be presenting at the IOA conference in April. (SHRM Vendor Directory.)

Organizational Ombuds

Organizational Ombuds serve as a confidential, independent, neutral and informal dispute resolution resource for a specific entity. They are accessible to a defined population and can advocate for fairness. These unique characteristics distinguish Organizational Ombuds from Classical Ombuds, mediators, arbitrators, and other alternative dispute resolution professionals. The term "Ombuds" is shorthand for "Ombudsman," "Ombudsperson" and "Ombuds Officer," which also are used widely.
