Charles Ellinger: University of Kentucky's First Ombuds

On December 12, 2020, Charles Ellinger, UK's first Ombuds passed at the age of 86. Ellinger was well-known in the community as a county councilman, restaurateur, and professor. He was a member of the faculty in the UK College of Dentistry when he was tapped to become the university’s first Academic Ombudsman in 1983. Janet Ellinger told the Lexington Herald Leader that the two years her husband spent as Ombudsman were important to him. “My husband never forgot what it was like to be a student,” she said. “He was a champion for the students.” (Lexington Herald Leader.)
