Howard University Selects First Faculty Ombuds

Kevin Gerard Linder has been named the inaugural Faculty Ombuds for the private university in Washington, DC. His appointment caps national searches in 2016, 2018, and 2024. He will establish a program that has been required by the faculty handbook since 2019 and will report to the Office of the President. Previously, Howard had a Student Ombuds, but that program appears to be defunct.

Linder comes to the position from the Denver Public Schools, where he served as the Associate Ombuds for over a year. Linder also has over 25 years of experience as an attorney and social worker. He graduated from Princeton University and studied law at Utrecht University and Hebrew at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He earned his JD at Washington University in St. Louis and MSW at the University of Georgia. He was awarded a John Lewis Fellowship in 2021. (LinkedIn.)

  1. I always wonder when I see language "will report to the Office of the President." Why is it so hard to just say "report to the president"? It conveys that a given position might end up reporting to a chief of staff, or someone else.

    1. I think that's the reality. The Ombuds is technically reporting to the Chief of Staff so the President isn't approving time sheets and vacation requests. In this case, the language in the post reflected the job description. I'm not sure of the actual arrangement.
