Strong Utilization Continues for CalSTRS Ombuds Office
The Office of the Ombuds for California State Teachers Retirement Fund released its annual report for 2024-25. According to Mark Gini, CalSTRS Ombuds, and Christina Nguyen, Associate Ombuds, the office handled about 330 cases in 2024-25 — down from 460 the prior year but still well above the 210 cases reported when it launched in 2019-20 — showing continued strong demand.
Most cases involved benefit status, especially service retirement. The office also flagged risks from members misunderstanding benefit account refunds and stressed the importance of timely information sharing from internal partners. (CalSTRS Ombuds Report.)
